People may find Art Therapy useful for the following reasons:

  • It's calming and potentially less intense than a purely talking therapy.
  • They can share how they are feeling without the fear of upsetting someone close to them.
  • It can help them to understand, work through and find positive ways of managing difficult issues, relationships, situations, anxieties etc.
  • It can help identify negative patterns of behaviour and with support, clients can try healthier ways of managing.
  • Because it is a safe and supportive environment, clients may be able to express emotions they have previously been unable to face on their own.
  • It can make people feel less isolated.
  • It helps people realise that what they are feeling is generally quite normal.
  • It assists clients to feel more in control of their lives.
  • It helps people to feel heard, supported and understood.
  • It's non-judgemental.
  • Sometimes clients don’t have the words to describe how they are feeling. The use of art materials can be used to explore and share problematic/painful issues or thoughts and emotions, when talking is difficult.

I was a reluctant client, but now I understand seeking help is a strength not a weakness
